Why Did We Move?
Do you know what 120 degrees feels like? That’s the kind of broiling heat one can experience in Phoenix in the summer. Unless they are swimming in a pool, our children don’t play outside. Not exactly ideal when your three children are 11, 9, and 7 years old. In short, desert-living did not suit us. So we decided to make a change. EveElise and I have been married for 14 years, but always expressed to each other our desire to move back to my hometown of San Diego. Well, you may be wondering what took us so long. I had one daughter from a previous marriage whom I still needed to raise. My eldest daughter, who is now 22 years old, graduated from college this past December and was married in February. Our home was listed for sale five days later. The previous 14 years’ of conversations where we expressed our longing for the beach prepared us for March 2, 2017, the day we put our home up for sale. We arrived in San Diego on April 18, 2017. Dreams do come true.
Life in Transition
Even though we knew at the deepest level that this is what we wanted, it was still difficult leaving wonderful neighbors, our children’s school and friends, and for EveElise to leave her family and relatives. We are thankful for their understanding that this was something we needed to do.
It’s been almost three weeks since our arrival. All the boxes have been emptied and our things put away. We have each made our trip to the DMV, and EveElise already has received her first non-Arizona driver’s license. Many of our other life requirements have been completed as well, like joining the local YMCA, finding a new Bikram Yoga studio in which to practice (Bikram Yoga San Diego is considered to be the HOTTEST studio in the country), and connecting with our local church. We’ve even begun to homeschool our three children in the Wonder Room upstairs. Each day we begin by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance! The children love to share various responsibilities including the ringing of the bell to start the school day. Best of all, we’ve enjoyed the beach a handful times already!
In one aspect, we had a nice life in Arizona. So why did we go thru the hassle to prepare a home for sale, put the home on the market for sale, rent a 26-ft U-Haul truck, filling that truck up with ALL of our stuff, drive 350 miles in that truck, unload that truck, and then spend the next 2 1/2 weeks putting everything away? It’s quite simple. We wanted to live the life we wanted, not the life others imagined for us. Now, we hit the beach whenever we want, go outside whenever we want, and more importantly, never have to wince from the oppressive heat when we venture outside.
Dreams Do Come True: So What About You?
Are you content with the life you are living? If not, what do you want to change? If you do want to make a change, but haven’t, what do you think is holding you back? EveElise and I wanted to make a change in our work life as far back as ten years ago. We wanted to live a laptop lifestyle by working from home. Unfortunately, we didn’t make that happen until recently because I held a secure, full-time job and didn’t know how to break free in a way that worked for us financially, but we kept our vision strong and learned what we needed to do to make it happen. We continued to plan and take action to achieve what we wanted, and we continue to do so.
Please feel free to reach out to us if you would like to discuss further how we are making this happen. More than anything else, we want to see others realize and live the lives they want.
